How to Grow Corn for Beginners

Best beginner variety: 'Silver Queen' or 'Bodacious' — sweet, classic, beginner-proof. Sweet corn picked 10 minutes before dinner is a completely different food than anything you can buy. A small block is enough to make this an annual tradition. Must be planted in blocks (not rows) for pollination — at least a 4×4 grid, 16+ plants minimum.

Is corn right for your garden?

  • Sun: Full sun (8+ hours)
  • Space: Large — minimum 4×4 ft block
  • Time: 30 min/week
  • Skill level: Beginner with space

Zone 9Not needed — direct sowDirect sow March or AugustApril–November

How much can you harvest?

1–2 ears per stalk. Plan 8–10 stalks per person.

Common beginner mistakes

  1. Planting in a single long row (poor pollination, half-empty ears)
  2. Skipping the block formation — wind needs neighbors to pollinate
  3. Letting raccoons or birds beat you to harvest

What to plant near corn

  • Beans (climb the stalks and fix nitrogen)
  • Squash (shades the soil)
  • Cucumber (similar timing)

Is corn safe for kids?

Magical for kids — they can watch silks turn into ears. Safe to handle and eat raw off the cob.

Dietary notes

Corn allergy is rare but real. Generally well tolerated.

Frequently asked questions

Can I grow corn in a container?

No — corn needs a block of soil for proper wind pollination. It's not a container crop.

How much corn do I need to plant?

Minimum 16 plants in a 4×4 block for reliable pollination.

Why are my corn ears half-empty?

Poor pollination. Plant in a tighter block next year so pollen reaches every silk.

When is corn ready to pick?

When silks are dry and brown, and a kernel pierced with a fingernail releases milky juice.
